Industrial Digital Twin Association – the Digital Twin, the future of industry
The principle seems quite straightforward: the Digital Twin connects physical industrial products with the digital world. However, for the successful implementation and international dissemination of this core technology – the future Industry 4.0 in practice – it is necessary for all stakeholders in industry, associations and research to have a common understanding of it.
We at IDTA act as a central point of contact for all interest groups. We provide the necessary specifications for interoperability and integrate harmonised submodels into the big picture. We also define processes, criteria and tools for creating and testing the Digital Twin. Moreover, in a pre-competitive training programme, we impart the expertise of IDTA in an appropriate way for the target groups.

Quotes from members
Our members are shaping the future of the Digital Twin
Andreas Radix, IntraNav
“Industrial process automation creates new opportunities to make processes safer and more efficient. A standardised data model and understanding of the digital twin is a prerequisite for cross-manufacturer data exchange.”
Gunther Koschnick, ZVEI e. V.
“ZVEI is leading the way with regard to the AAS, which it launched six years ago. Thanks to IDTA, we can now begin with operationalisation and have a central point of contact for the further development and international dissemination of the AAS.”
Dr Horst Heinol-Heikkinen, ASENTICS GmbH & Co. KG
“The Digital Twin is the key investment in the future viability and crisis resilience of mechanical engineering. Above all, however, it is paving the way for our future business areas. With IDTA, we have now gained creative momentum – so let’s get on with it!”
Dr Dirk Thieme, Volkswagen AG
“We don’t want to create a generic overall model, but a model for production that can work with other existing models and supports digitisation on a global scale in the sense of Industry 4.0.”
Nils Herzberg, SAP SE
“The Digital Twin for industry enables interoperability, integrates the IT/OT world and promotes new business models for Industry 4.0. IDTA provides us with a community in which we can work together to develop the parts of the Digital Twin.”
Ernst Esslinger, Homag GmbH
“For us as a mechanical engineering company, it is becoming increasingly important to record data along a product life cycle digitally and document it in a standardised manner. The AAS as a Digital Twin lays the ideal foundations here, enabling us and our customers to achieve this quite easily.”
Burkhard Balz, Lenze SE
“The Digital Twin forms the basis for applications and services along the life cycle of devices and machines. Lenze sees a high potential here and supports the Digital Twin for its own components as well as for implementation on the OEM side.”
Hartmut Rauen, VDMA e.V.
“IDTA is the product of a joint initiative of VDMA, ZVEI and the Industry 4.0 platform. Our talent for global networking and implementation will give the idea of the Industrial Digital Twin room for operational implementation.”
Dr Matthias Bölke, Schneider Electric SE
“Digital Twins are accelerating digital transformation and are now conquering industry. As isolated solutions are not sustainable, IDTA is creating an innovative, standardised and open Industrial Digital Twin.”
Alliance of technology leaders
Industrial Digital Twin Association: much more than just an administration shell
IDTA sees itself as a powerful alliance that is actively shaping the future of the Digital Twin in an innovative way. Its active members include many top industrial firms that are internationally recognised as technology leaders. The joint expertise in many fields lays the foundations for knowing the exact practical requirements that the Digital Twin needs to meet and for fulfilling them in technical and organisational terms with IDTA.
Industrial companies of all sizes and from all sectors – regardless of whether they are global corporations or SMEs – benefit equally from participation in the Industrial Digital Twin Association and the results of the joint work. The most important tool in IDTA’s work is the Asset Administration Shell (AAS), which represents each asset digitally.
