Network for Open Source Activities for the Asset Administration Shell

Fraunhofer and IDTA sign cooperation agreement at Hannover Messe

Dr. Thomas Kuhn from Fraunhofer IESE, as representative of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft for the project “BaSys”, signed a “Memorandum of Understanding” ( MoU) with the Industrial Digital Twin Association e.V. (IDTA) at Hannover Messe 2022. The two partners are thus establishing a contractually agreed cooperation for the standardisation of Asset Administration Shells for industry.

IDTA’s goal is to standardise the Asset Administration Shell submodels so that assets – such as devices or software systems from different manufacturers – speak the same language and can interact with each other. Another concern of the IDTA is the development of an open source software stack for Asset Administration Shells – always with a view to the specific requirements of the industry.

Led by Fraunhofer IESE, a solution has already been developed in the BaSys project with the open-source middleware Eclipse BaSyx, which enables companies to link all necessary manufacturing services by using the Asset Administration Shell. “For us, it is now particularly important that BaSys does not stand on its own, but that we are networked and collaborate with IDTA. This allows us to integrate the requirements from industry even more strongly into our research”, says Dr. Thomas Kuhn, Division Manager Embedded Systems at Fraunhofer IESE. As representative of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, he carries out the membership rights in the IDTA. At the Hannover Messe 2022, the IDTA signed further MOUs with companies from science and industry in order to further advance the standardisation of the Asset Administration Shell in the network.
